Vesalius. The quivering brain.

4 12 2009

I’m currently studying the emerging Motion Comics animation genre for my PhD. I’m studying vintage archives of illustrated books, prints, paintings and manuscripts as part of my ongoing research and creative practice. www.fromoldbooks.org is an excellent repository, which features work such as Fabrica by the great anatomist Andreas Vesalius. His illustration ‘The quivering brain’ is one of his most visceral works and his great work “The structure of the human body” drew such opposition from the Church and authorities at the time (16th Century) that he was forced to renounce it. The power of his illustrations still resonate today.

Fabrica…One of the illustrations from Fabrica.
