Brian Michael Bendis has written a four-part motion comic series for the upcoming ‘MARVEL HEROES’ MMOG (Massively multiplayer online game). Episode 1 features the Fantastic Four and Dr Doom. There are some interesting moments including a slo-mo action sequence with Doom and the Thing, and some additional VFX depicting force fields etc.

Past Away: Choose How You’ll Survive!

29 04 2013

‘Past Away’ is a new Kickstarter project that has a lot of promise. Combining motion comic aesthetics, drawn animation and interactive elements. The project certainly looks worthy of support, especially if the voice talent matches the visuals.

Following the visual stylings of ‘Fubar’ and ‘Dr. Professor’s Thesis of Evil’, this motion comic promotes the work of a group of ‘Costumers’ from Mexico. Mixing both static and live-action footage, this promo motion comic demonstrates a playful energy that captures the spirit of cosplay. The costumes and art were inspired by the ‘New 52s’ from DC Comics.

‘Inhumans’ Motion Comic – Prelude to a live-action film?

30 01 2013

Arguably Marvel Comics most eclectic and odd gathering of super-powered beings (and I include the X-Men in that list), the Inhumans have always intrigued me, ever since I saw them in a Fantastic Four reprint from the sixties. Their king, Black-Bolt always fascinated me as a young comic book reader. Here was a being of immense power, tempered by a stony silence as a result of his earth-shattering voice (which raised Attilan to the ground when he was a baby). The motion comic will be available from 23 April 2013.

“The Inhumans have always been one of Marvels most enduring oddities. A race of genetic outsiders, they live secluded in their island kingdom of Attilan, preferring not to mix with the outside world. Even stranger, their genetic mutations are self-endowed; each Inhuman, as a coming-of-age ritual, endures exposure to the Terrigen Mists, a strange substance that imparts unearthly powers — some extraordinary, some monstrous.”

Written, Directed and Produced by Edson Oda, ‘Malaria’ is a wonderfully innovative and well-crafted animation that combines various animation techniques to good effect. Furthermore, Oda’s script is both imaginative and deftly crafted, which further enhances the impact of his work.

“MALARIA tells the story of Fabiano, a young Mercenary who is hired to kill Death. This short film combines Origami, Kirigami, Time lapse, nankin illustration, Comic Books and Western Cinema.”

The Goon Re-Enacts ‘A Christmas Carol’ – Dark Horse Comics: A Goon Christmas – YouTube

14 12 2012

Rejoice! Writer and artist Eric Powell, and Director Erik Bruhwiler bring you a ‘Christmas Carol’ like no other!

This version of Dickens’ festive tale re-imagines the classic Victorian tale in a style more in keeping with ‘The Goon’. Powell clearly enjoys subverting some of the characteristics of the various protagonists within the narrative. In particular, Bob Cratchett seems more interested in enjoying himself, than providing for his sickly child. Instead of working on Christmas day, as Scrooge suggests, Bob declares “Screw that! I’m making merry, aka gettin’ real drunk!”

The Dandy Online Digital Comic

4 12 2012

The Dandy have just released their online digital comic, which uses html5 technology to have simple interactivity and navigation etc. I grew up reading this mainstay of British children’s comics and hope that it develops into a sustainable and profitable venture for them. Having said that, I do think that their current digital issue lacks a number of important details such as a clear ending to the narratives and a simple ‘back’ button to return the viewer to the main menu. Some further thought needs to be taken to bridge the gap between the comic book and the online version … Check it out now, the first issue is free: http://www.dandy.com/issue-zero
